TITLE : Creating a Boot Floppy Disk
The purpose of this Technical Information Sheet is to outline the
steps necessary to create a boot floppy disk using DOS. A boot
floppy disk has the necessary system files to start a computer
from a floppy drive.
When memory conflicts are suspected in Paradox performance
problems, it is often desirable to "boot clean" to create a
simplified memory environment so specific memory conflict issues
can be isolated. This means that the computer system is booted
with no unnecessary software or drivers loading from the
CONFIG.SYS or AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Creating a boot floppy disk is
the safest method of achieving this.
STEPS TO CREATE A BOOT FLOPPY DISK.
1. The first step is to insert a floppy disk of the
appropriate density in the A: drive. It is important to
note that any data stored on the floppy will be lost in
the formatting process.
2. Format the floppy disk by typing the command: FORMAT A: /S
Extreme care should be taken to type only the letter of a
floppy disk drive and NOT the letter of a fixed disk on
the system. The /S parameter tells DOS to copy the system
files necessary for booting from the fixed disk onto the
floppy disk.
3. Next, determine what software and/or drivers are necessary
for proper functioning of the system.
Network drivers would be necessary if Paradox is installed
on or is accessing the network. DOS SHARE may also be
necessary when Paradox is loaded on certain networks such
as LANtastic or Netware Lite.

4. A CONFIG.SYS file should then be created on the floppy to
load necessary drivers and should also contain the lines:
FILES=40
BUFFERS=30
Please refer to your DOS manual for information on how to
create a CONFIG.SYS file.
5. An AUTOEXEC.BAT file can then be created with the PROMPT
statement and any necessary network commands.
The system can now be re-booted or reset with the floppy disk in
drive A:. When the A: prompt appears, change to the fixed disk
and subdirectory where Paradox files are located and start
Paradox. Paradox will now be running in a relatively "clean"
environment and tests can be performed to determine if drivers
and software previously loaded were affecting performance.

Technical Information Sheet #1216. For information on using DOS
commands and creating files on disk, see your DOS manual.
